Submitting a Housing Complaint

The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department (VBCDHD) Environmental Health team responds to housing complaints that may impact public health and safety. Common concerns include sewage on the ground or in surface water, insect or rodent infestations, lack of potable water, and the accumulation of garbage or solid waste. We collaborate with local municipalities and other agencies to reduce the risk of disease and injury from these issues, ensuring our communities remain safe and healthy.

Public Swimming Pool Inspections

Inspection and licensing program to ensure public swimming pools are maintained in safe and sanitary conditions.
Public swimming pools are required by law to be licensed.

Public Swimming Pools

The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) requires a permit when building a public swimming pool.

  • A monthly swimming pool operation report is used to record and submit information about a pool’s operation to the local health department.
  • The owner of the pool must submit the completed report to the health department within 10 days after the end of each month. Failure to do so is a violation of the law.

Campgrounds Inspections & Licensing

Inspection and Licensing program to ensure that campgrounds are maintained in a safe and sanitary manner in Van Buren and Cass counties.

Campgrounds Licensing

Part 125 of Michigan’s Public Health Code, 1978 PA 368, as amended, and its administrative rules, establish the requirements for constructing, modifying, licensing, and operating a campground.

A license from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy is required to operate a campground offering five or more campsites/recreational units in the State of Michigan.

The Temporary Campground License Application is a triplicate form and may not be downloaded or copied. Please contact Van Buren/Cass District Health Department’s Environmental Health Division at 269-621-3143 for an application or call the EGLE’s Campground Program at 517-284-6520.

Body Art Licensing and Inspections

Operation of a Body Art establishment in Cass and/or VanBuren Counties requires a license. Body art is the making of art on the human body. Tattoos, piercings, branding, and other specific body modifications. Within Michigan, facilities that conduct body art procedures must be licensed by the state, and then are inspected by health departments.

Tattooing, piercing, branding or other specific body art procedures done outside of a licensed shop is illegal.

Body Art Licensing Requirements

Owners or operators of body art facilities will be required to apply for a body art facility license through MDHHS. Please contact VBCDHD and complete a plan review BEFORE applying for a license.
