Van Buren/Cass District Health Department (VBCDHD) is letting you know about Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV) found in mosquitos and animals in both Van Buren and Cass counties. Although no people have gotten sick yet, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself and your pets:
- Use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Wear long sleeves and pants when you’re outside, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Avoid being outside during peak mosquito hours (dusk to dawn).
- Get rid of standing water in places like birdbaths and flowerpots.
- Protect your pets and livestock by vaccinating horses and keeping pets indoors during peak mosquito times.
