FDA Issues Safety Warning on Lead Risks in Imported Cookware
FDA Issues Safety Warning on Lead Risks in Imported Cookware
The FDA is alerting retailers and distributors about potential lead risks from certain imported aluminum, brass, and alloy cookware, often labeled as Hindalium, Hindolium, Indalium, or Indolium. These products, tested in collaboration with the Public Health Department of Seattle and King County (PHSKC), have shown potential to leach lead into food, posing serious health risks.
Key Concerns:
- Health Risks: Cooking with these products may lead to elevated blood lead levels, particularly harmful to children and pregnant individuals. Lead exposure can cause neurological effects, learning disabilities, and behavior issues.
- Products of Concern: Affected cookware includes items listed in the PHSKC Table of Cookware That Contains Lead.
- FDA Actions: The FDA added the manufacturer, Rashko Baba Co. Ltd., to an import alert and worked with PHSKC to remove some products from the market.
Consumer Guidance:
- Health Concerns: If you suspect exposure to lead from cookware, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
- Product Safety: Replace cookware identified as hazardous. For more details, visit the FDA’s Lead in Food and Foodwares page.
- Report Issues: File complaints about unsafe products via Industry and Consumer Assistance.
