Keep Pets Safe During July 4th Celebrations

LANSING, MI—The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) urges Michiganders to protect their pets during Independence Day. Fireworks and festivities can cause stress and anxiety in animals.

State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland emphasizes, “The intense heat, unexpected sounds, flashing lights, and unfamiliar environments can all be a source of stress. Taking steps to ensure animals are cool, hydrated, and calm is essential to their overall health.”

According to the ASPCA, more pets go missing around July 4th than any other time of year. Here are tips to keep your pets safe:

  • Ensure pets have access to cool, clean water and a place to cool down.
  • Keep pets away from others with unknown health statuses.
  • Ensure pets have ID tags or microchips with current contact information.
  • Avoid shared bowls and toys.
  • Know your pet’s limits regarding stress and heat.
  • Keep pets indoors during fireworks.
  • Open doors carefully to prevent escapes.
  • Contact local animal control if a pet escapes or you find a lost pet.
  • Provide a quiet space for pets to reduce stress.
  • Offer pet-friendly treats or toys to distract from fireworks.
  • Keep dogs on a leash if taken outside, even in fenced areas.
  • Keep livestock safely fenced or in barns.
  • Never set off fireworks near animals.
  • Check on pets periodically during loud noises.
  • Remove firework debris from yards or pastures before letting pets outside.
