Communicable Disease Reporting
Michigan healthcare providers must report certain diseases to the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department.
The Michigan Department of Community Health has updated its Communicable Disease Reporting Rules. The Emergency Rule, adopted in December 2004, adds the following diseases to the list of notifiable conditions:
- Arboviral Diseases (e.g., West Nile Virus, St. Louis Encephalitis)
- Avian Influenza
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD)
- Monkeypox
- Smallpox
- SARS
- Staphylococcus aureus (vancomycin-intermediate or resistant)
- Streptococcus pneumoniae (invasive or resistant)

Providers Need to Report
Reporting communicable diseases is essential to:
- Detect outbreaks and epidemics early.
- Provide preventive treatment or education to affected individuals.
- Focus prevention programs and efficiently allocate resources.
- Measure the success of long-term control efforts.
- Support research to uncover preventable causes.
- Contribute to national and global disease surveillance efforts.

Physicians are required by law to report these diseases to their local health department.
If you suspect any of these conditions in a patient, please contact the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department Communicable Disease team at (269) 621-3143.
Providers can also download the Mandatory Report of Communicable Disease form and fax to (269) 621-2725.
