Vector-Borne Diseases
A disease caused by infections spread to humans and animals through blood-feeding insects like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.
Mosquito Surveillance
Monitoring at 8 sites in Van Buren and Cass County, in partnership with MDHHS. Focused on tracking mosquito species and assessing the risk of diseases like Zika.
Common Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)
Spread by infected mosquitoes, EEE is rare but can cause severe illness or death. Seek medical help if you have fever, headache, or confusion.
Zika Virus
Zika is spread by mosquitoes biting day and night, and through sexual contact. It poses risks for pregnant women, potentially causing birth defects.
West Nile Virus
West Nile primarily affects people over 60 but can infect anyone. Symptoms include fever, headaches, and body aches. Severe cases can lead to neurological damage.
Preventing Mosquito Bites
Ticks and Your Health
Ticks are active in wooded and grassy areas, and they can transmit several serious illnesses, including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). These diseases can cause severe symptoms if not treated.
Lyme Disease
Spread by the bite of infected black-legged (deer) ticks.
If you camp, hike, or work outdoors, you are at risk.
Early detection and treatment with antibiotics are crucial.
Symptoms: Fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash.
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF)
RMSF is a potentially fatal bacterial disease spread by infected ticks.
It is most common during summer but can occur year-round.
Symptoms: Fever, rash, nausea, and muscle pain. Immediate treatment is essential.
Preventing Tick Bites
Use EPA-approved tick repellents on skin and clothing.
Check for ticks after spending time outdoors.
Shower soon after returning from tick-prone areas to reduce the chance of infection.
