Measles and Dengue Virus Updates for Our Community

Measles Update:
As of April 22, eight cases of measles have been confirmed in Michigan, including residents from Oakland, Kent, Macomb, Montcalm, and Ingham counties. Most cases are connected to recent international travel. A measles outbreak (three or more related cases) was confirmed in Montcalm County — Michigan’s first since 2019. This outbreak is linked to a larger outbreak in Ontario, Canada, where over 1,000 cases have been reported.

Measles spreads easily through the air or direct contact with an infected person. It is a serious but preventable disease. The best protection is the MMR vaccine, which is about 97% effective after two doses.

Dengue Virus Update:
The CDC recently issued a health update about the risk of dengue virus. Dengue is spread by mosquitoes and can cause high fever, flu-like symptoms, and, in severe cases, bleeding or death. Most dengue cases in Michigan are travel-related. So far in 2025, there have been five cases in Michigan.

Protect Yourself and Others:

  • Make sure you are up to date on the MMR vaccine.
  • Take precautions when traveling internationally, especially to areas with measles or dengue outbreaks.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites by using repellent and wearing long sleeves.
