Bird Flu Alert: Protect Your Birds

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), or bird flu, has been detected in a commercial flock in Kent County, Michigan. The public health risk is low, but bird owners should take precautions.

How to Protect Your Birds

  • Keep domestic birds away from wild birds.
  • Wash hands before and after handling birds.
  • Disinfect boots and equipment between coops.
  • Do not share supplies between flocks.
  • Use well or municipal water for drinking.
  • Store feed securely to prevent contact with wild birds or rodents.

Watch for Signs

  • Sudden deaths in your flock
  • Drop in egg production
  • Decreased water consumption
  • Diarrhea, sneezing, or coughing
