Bird Flu Alert: Protect Your Birds
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), or bird flu, has been detected in a commercial flock in Kent County, Michigan. The public health risk is low, but bird owners should take precautions.
How to Protect Your Birds
- Keep domestic birds away from wild birds.
- Wash hands before and after handling birds.
- Disinfect boots and equipment between coops.
- Do not share supplies between flocks.
- Use well or municipal water for drinking.
- Store feed securely to prevent contact with wild birds or rodents.
Watch for Signs
- Sudden deaths in your flock
- Drop in egg production
- Decreased water consumption
- Diarrhea, sneezing, or coughing
