PFAS Contamination in Watervliet: Key Updates & Resources

Watervliet Area PFAS Investigation

The Paw Paw Lake Area Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Watervliet, Berrien County, detected elevated levels of PFAS in its effluent, prompting a comprehensive investigation by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Two significant sources were identified: old irrigation fields linked to a former paper company and a sewer line near the old paper mill. Groundwater flow towards the Paw Paw River raises concerns about potential contamination of nearby residential wells.

Current Status and Next Steps

As of June 2024, EGLE, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and local health officials are evaluating residential wells near the identified sources. Sampling of these wells is scheduled for July and August 2024. Depending on the results, additional testing may be conducted in a broader area to assess further contamination risks.
