Protect Your Backyard Flock from Avian Influenza (H5N1)

As migratory birds return to Michigan, the risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in backyard flocks increases. This virus spreads easily and can be deadly to chickens, ducks, and other poultry.

How to Protect Your Flock:

✔ Prevent Contact with Wild Birds – Keep poultry in a covered, enclosed space.
✔ Practice Good Biosecurity – Wash hands, disinfect equipment, and avoid sharing tools.
✔ Monitor for Symptoms – Watch for coughing, swelling, or sudden deaths in birds.
✔ Limit Visitors – Only allow necessary contact with your flock.

What to Do If You Find Dead Birds

If you find 6 or more dead wild birds in one area, report it to the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD) at michigan.gov/birdflu.
