Think Food Safety this Memorial Day, MDARD Reminds Michiganders
Memorial Day marks Michigan’s start to picnic and barbeque season. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) urges everyone to prioritize food safety to prevent foodborne illnesses. Here are essential tips:
- Wash Hands: Use soap and water; if unavailable, use handwipes or sanitizer.
- Keep Food at Safe Temperatures: Avoid the “Danger Zone” (40°F-140°F). Use ice to keep food cold and store leftovers promptly.
- Separate Coolers: Use one for beverages and another for perishables to maintain temperature.
- Cook Meats Properly: Use a meat thermometer to ensure meats are cooked to safe temperatures.
- Clean Surfaces: Bring soapy towelettes and use table covers to maintain cleanliness.
If you suspect you have eaten something that has made you ill, please seek medical attention and report your illness to Van Buren/Cass District Health Department or visit our website here. Your doctor can assist with this process, or you can contact VBCDHD directly at (269) 621-3143. For more tips, visit foodsafety.gov. Enjoy a safe Memorial Day!
