Alert: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected in Newaygo County Flock

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been found in a commercial poultry facility in Newaygo County, marking Michigan’s seventh such case since 2022. With wild birds migrating, the risk remains high. Producers are urged to enhance biosecurity to protect their flocks. The virus, easily spread through contact with infected poultry and wild birds, poses a significant threat. Depopulation measures are in place, ensuring no infected animals enter the food chain. Strict preventative measures, including avoiding contact between domestic and wild birds, are crucial. MDARD continues to respond swiftly to reports of HPAI, urging vigilance among bird owners and offering resources for prevention.
