East Jordan Plastics Fire Update

The fire at East Jordan Plastics in South Haven has been extinguished. No injuries were reported.

South Haven Area Emergency Services and 17 fire departments responded to the fire. Power was restored Friday evening, and the area around Blue Star Highway and Stieve Drive has reopened.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted air monitoring around the facility and in nearby areas. Initial monitoring found elevated fine particles associated with the fire and one temporary elevated reading for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) onsite. The latest monitoring found no elevated levels of particulate matter or VOCs. EPA, after consulting with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, determined that additional EPA air monitoring was not needed.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is now overseeing the remaining cleanup and environmental response. Firefighting water is being contained and evaluated, and a barrier has been placed in the nearby creek to collect potential debris, including plastic pellets.

The City and partner agencies will continue investigating the cause of the fire and any potential environmental impacts. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
