Celebrating Prevention Efforts: Michigan Recognizes National Prevention Week
In observance of National Prevention Week from May 12-18, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) acknowledges the dedicated work of prevention providers across the state in combatting substance use disorder and advancing mental health awareness. MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel praises the crucial contributions of prevention workers, emphasizing their diverse services’ importance in averting substance misuse and enhancing mental health understanding.
Michigan’s collaborative prevention initiatives, spearheaded by MDHHS and community partners, encompass awareness campaigns, strategic interventions, partnership cultivation, and resource promotion. These efforts have had huge successes, including substantial reductions in alcohol consumption, nonmedical prescription pain reliever use, cigarette smoking, and slight declines in youth marijuana usage.
Individuals struggling or experiencing a crisis, are urged to call or text 988 or visit the Lifeline Chat to connect with a trained crisis counselor. Information about prevention, treatment and other services is available online at Substance Use Prevention (michigan.gov) or Michigan.gov/opioids. Read press release here.
