MDHHS Warns About Serious Health Risks From Recreational Nitrous Oxide Use

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is warning residents about the serious health risks associated with recreational use of nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” “whippets,” “balloons,” “Galaxy Gas” or “NOS.”

Nitrous oxide has medical, dental and culinary uses. However, recreational use—especially repeated or high-volume use—can lead to serious health problems.

Health risks

Recreational nitrous oxide use can cause:

• Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
• Trouble walking, balance problems or unexpected falls.
• Confusion, anxiety, mood changes or memory problems.
• Passing out or trouble breathing.
• Anemia and blood clots.
• Injuries related to impaired judgment or loss of consciousness.
• Frostbite or asphyxiation from improper use of nitrous oxide canisters or chargers.

Michigan has seen an increase in nitrous oxide-related health emergencies. Between 2024 and May 2026, 34% of reported cases required hospitalization and 7% required admission to an intensive care unit. Nearly half of the reported cases resulted in medically significant health effects.

Know the warning signs

People may not immediately connect symptoms to nitrous oxide use, particularly when use is ongoing. Seek medical attention if someone develops numbness or tingling, difficulty walking, balance problems, confusion, significant mood changes, anxiety, passes out or has trouble breathing after using nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide intoxication can impair judgment, coordination and reaction time. Do not drive after using nitrous oxide.

If you experience concerning symptoms after using nitrous oxide, stop using it and seek medical care. If someone is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.
