  • Current Statistics: Approximately 60 animal rabies cases are reported annually in Michigan, with 90% involving bats. Human rabies deaths in the U.S. have decreased to 1-2 per year due to advancements in vaccination and public health measures.
  • Post-Exposure Actions:
    • Clean wounds immediately with soap and water.
    • Use a virucidal agent like povidone-iodine if possible.
    • Consult a healthcare provider for potential rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP), which may include HRIG and rabies vaccines.
  • Prevention Tips:
    • Seal Entry Points: Close gaps and cracks in your home with caulk, weather stripping, or steel wool.
    • Screen Windows and Vents: Ensure screens are intact and attic vents are closed.
    • Install Bat Houses: Place bat houses 12–20 feet off the ground to provide alternative roosting sites.
    • Use Repellents: Natural repellents like cinnamon, peppermint, and eucalyptus can deter bats.
    • Remove Attractants: Eliminate standing water, trim trees and bushes, and clean up fallen fruit.
    • Consider Professional Help: Hire experts for bat-proofing your home if needed.

    • Use gloves and a small container to safely collect the bat.
    • Place the bat in a container with small holes for breathing.
    • Contact local public health or animal control for rabies testing guidance.
