Avian Influenza Detected in Ottawa County Dairy Herd

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a dairy herd in Ottawa County. Initial testing was done by the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, with confirmatory testing underway at the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

MDARD Director Tim Boring emphasized the importance of biosecurity in combating HPAI. Enhanced biosecurity measures have been mandated for all Michigan dairy operations since May 8, 2024, to reduce the risk of virus introduction.

Farmers are advised to follow key biosecurity steps, including isolating new animals, monitoring animal health, using dedicated equipment for sick animals, and ensuring cleanliness to prevent disease spread. MDARD is actively working with veterinarians and partners to monitor and mitigate the HPAI outbreak.
