Extreme Heat Advisory: Prepare Now for Dangerous Heat Conditions

The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department is advising residents to prepare for dangerously hot weather expected Monday, June 29 through Wednesday, July 1.

According to the forecast, daytime temperatures are expected to reach the 90s, with heat index values making it feel like the upper 90s to low 100s. These conditions increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Everyone should take precautions, especially older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and individuals without access to air conditioning.

Protect Yourself During Extreme Heat

Residents are encouraged to:

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
• Spend time in air-conditioned buildings such as libraries, community centers, shopping centers, or other public facilities.
• Limit outdoor activities, especially between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
• Check on family members, friends, neighbors, and others who may need assistance during the heat.

Know the Warning Signs

Heat exhaustion symptoms may include:

• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness
• Weakness
• Nausea
• Headache
• Muscle cramps

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms may include confusion, loss of consciousness, or a body temperature above 103°F. If you suspect someone is experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather conditions and take precautions throughout the heat event.
