Pertussis Cases Confirmed in District: Health Advisory

Pertussis Cases Confirmed in District: Health Advisory

The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department (VBCDHD) has confirmed multiple cases of pertussis (whooping cough) within the district. Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads through direct contact or airborne droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze.

Key Information:

  • Symptoms: Initially, pertussis resembles a common cold but can progress to severe coughing spells. Infants may have trouble breathing instead of coughing.
  • Treatment: Seek medical attention if symptoms arise. Antibiotics can lessen the severity and prevent further spread.
  • Prevention: Vaccination is crucial. Ensure children receive the full DTaP series, and adults get a Tdap booster every 10 years. Pregnant women should get a Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy.

For more information, visit the CDC’s Pertussis Page or contact VBCDHD at 269-621-3143. Read full press release here:
