Protect Yourself: First 2024 Mosquito Virus Detected in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan residents are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites as the first mosquito-borne virus of 2024, Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV), has been detected in Saginaw County. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) confirmed the virus on May 22.

Key Precautions:

• Use EPA-registered insect repellent.
• Avoid areas with high mosquito activity.
• Wear clothing that covers arms and legs.

Mosquito-Borne Illnesses:

• JCV can cause severe illness from a single bite.
• Other illnesses include Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile virus (WNV).

Symptoms of JCV:

• Initial symptoms: fever, headache, fatigue.
• Severe cases: encephalitis, meningitis.

Prevention Tips:

1. Use DEET-based or EPA-approved repellents.
2. Wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants.
3. Ensure windows and doors have intact screens.
4. Remove standing water where mosquitos breed.
